Do I need to buy the IAP?

No. The in-app purchases are completely optional.  You can purchase Diamonds from the store and trade them for gold or to open treasure chests.  And of course you can receive items during the course of normal gameplay and watch an ad to receive larger in-game rewards, or to lesson in-game penalties.
